As Hammerschloss are mainly in the Upper Palatinate as representative residential building of hammer mill-owners (called hammer men ) from the 16th to the 18th century built country palaces called.

The hammer locks are usually located in the immediate vicinity of the hammer mill or a hammer mill , i.e. also on a river, which helped to drive the mill wheel. Important hammer locks are located along the Bavarian Iron Road , such as B. in Theuern , Röthenbach , Dietldorf and Schmidmühlen to see.

Due to the end of iron processing in Bavaria, many castles were unused for years. Today they are often restored and marketed as tourist destinations.

A counterpart are the Hammerherrenhäuser , which occur mainly in Austria .
