The Hamoaze (also Hamoaze Estuary ) is an estuary in southwest England that extends from the confluence of the Tamar and its tributaries Tavy and Lynher north of Saltash to the transition into the English Channel . It stretches along the border between Devon and Cornwall . It flows from its starting point past the opposite cities of Plymouth and Torpoint , which are connected by a chain ferry . Here it flows along the naval base Devonport up to the southern tip of Plymouth , where he between Devil's Point and Mount Edgcumbe in Plymouth Sound passes, which in turn empties into the English Channel. Since the 1980s, the Hamoaze is often no longer shown on maps as a separate river, but as part of the Plymouth Sound.

The Hamoaze is completely navigable. Between Plymouth Sound and Devonport Naval Base, ships can pass the river to a depth of 16 m, north of which the maximum draft is 10 m. The southern section is particularly frequented by warships of the Royal Navy , as Devonport is the largest naval base in Western Europe. In addition, the Hamoaze with its side arms is also a popular sailing area.
