In the 1600s, American Indians and immigrants from France settled in the area. Then in 1784 loyalists established a settlement on the banks of the Kennebecasis River. It is believed that the Loyalists came from the Hamptons and named their new settlement in Canada Hampton. Since the area was extremely fertile, agriculture became the main livelihood of the inhabitants. Because of the natural beauties of the area with mountains, forests, marshlands , rivers, lakes, gardens and parks, tourism is developing into another important area and the city advertises with the slogan: It's our nature!
