Han-sur-Lesse is a former municipality in the province of Namur in Wallonia , Belgium . As part of the municipal reform, Han-sur-Lesse was assigned to the municipality of Rochefort . It lies in the valley of the Lesse .

Naming

In 1139 the village of Ham was named in a document, from 1266 Han Sur Lesche , according to the language change of the river then Han-Sur Lece (1465) and from 1528 Ham lez can be found in the documents. According to historical researchers, the name Han originated from the term Hameau , French for hamlet , small place , via Ham to Han . And sur Lesse means located on the river Lesse . Han or Ham have many other places in their name that are located on a river meander. A meander can no longer be found in Han-sur-Lesse today, but the bed of the river was always reshaped by it, even when it was flooded. However, it still winds around the Belvaux massif and eventually disappears into the extensive cave system.

General

The inhabitants of the place call themselves Ayets . An air battalion of the Belgian armed forces has been stationed in Han-sur-Lesse since 1974. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, a big celebration took place in the center of the village and on the square at the cave exit, at which helicopter flights and hang gliding were on offer.

Buildings, nature, tourism

St. Hubert Church

The dominant feature of the village is the St. Hubert church, built in 1902/1903 in the neo-Gothic style. In front of the entrance on the main street there is a linden tree into which numerous nails have been driven. According to one superstition , touching or hanging up wishes for recovery is said to bring healing. Toothache is said to be particularly effective.

Instead of a town hall there is the village house (Maison de Village), which functions as a cultural center. Performances by artists, association meetings, family celebrations and other cultural activities took place here under the auspices of the City of Rochefort. The village house has a stage, a multi-purpose room for up to 200 people, a bar and a modern kitchen.

The municipal school is located in a small complex of buildings at 3 rue Joseph Lamotte.

Several well-preserved residential villas have been built along the eponymous river. In addition, Han-sur-Lesse has had a wildlife park since 1970 , which is advertised in various places.

Also on the Place Théo Lannoy in front of the church building is a small copper sculpture on two short metal feet. It is shaped like a plum that has been split open and shows a man on one side from the front, on the opposite side a bear is modeled. You can look through the figures from the outside or take photos, so "fearlessly face a bear".

Tram to the grotto

Han-Sur-Lesse is best known for its stalactite cave , a crowd puller in Wallonia. The cave has the largest natural rock room in Belgium, which is used as a light installation for the groups of visitors. The entrance to the cave can be easily reached from the town center by tram operated by the National Railway Company . There are also special buses and coaches with up to two trailers.

In addition to hiking, canoe tours on the Lesse are also popular with tourists and are organized by numerous canoe rentals.
