Ricardo Ehrlich

Ricardo Mario Ehrlich Szalmian (born November 4, 1948 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician. From 2005 to 2010 he was Mayor ( Spanish : Intendente Municipal ) of Montevideo.

Ehrlich was arrested in 1972 because of his connections to the guerrilla movement MLN and after his release from prison in 1973 he went to Europe, where he lived in exile in France until his return in 1987 . In the mayoral elections of 2005 Ehrlich emerged as the winner of the Frente Amplio with 61 percent. His closest rival was Pedro Bordaberry of the Partido Colorado , a son of ex-President Juan María Bordaberry , with 27 percent . Ehrlich became the official successor of the architect Mariano Arana . He held this office until February 26, 2010. Since March 1st of the same year he has been a member of the cabinet of President José Mujica and heads the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Ricardo Ehrlich is a biochemist by profession and was dean of the chemistry faculty at the University of Montevideo until his election.
