Han Gan ( Chinese  韓 幹  /  韩 干 , Pinyin Hán Gàn ; * 706 ; † 783 ) was a Chinese painter of the Tang Dynasty . According to historical records, he was born in Chang'an, Shaanxi Province or Daliang , Henan Province, to a poor family. At a young age, Wang Wei , a famous poet, recognized Han's talent and promoted his art education. After his studies, Han became a painter at the imperial court.

He has painted numerous portraits and pictures on Buddhist themes, but he is best known for his paintings of horses. It is said that he not only reproduced the outward appearance of a horse, but also his spirit. His reputation grew and soon surpassed that of his teacher. He served as a model for horse painters of later generations.
