Han Moo-sook (born October 25, 1918 in Seoul , † 1993 ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Han Moo-sook was born in Seoul on October 25, 1918 and graduated from Pusan Girls School in 1937 .

In 1942 her first story The Woman with the Lamp (등불 드는 여인) was published in the magazine Neue Zeit (Sin saedae). She then published two plays, Heart (마음) in 1943 and Frostblume (서리꽃) in 1944. In 1948, Han Moo-sook's novel And How History Flows (역사 는 흐른다) was published as a serial in the daily newspaper Kukche Sinmun .

Han Moo-sook's works are often seen as an attempt to grasp the value of purity through literature. At a time when Korean literature was immersed in nihilism or existentialism, Han Moo-sook made a name for herself as a writer who sought to express human joy and problems with warmth rather than cynical pessimism. The subjects she touches on range from universal issues such as love and suffering to subjects specifically related to the Korean present. For example, the agony of the generation who witnessed the brief democracy euphoria of the April revolution in 1960. All of her works reflect her literary talent through the use of precise language, vivid presentation of customs and skillful representation of inner consciousness. Han Moo-sook worked in various positions in the field of culture and literature. For example, she was the director of the Korean PEN Club, the National Museum of Korea and the Association of Korean Women Authors. She passed away in 1993.

The Department of East Asian Languages ​​and Literature at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at George Washington University has organized a Han Moo sook colloquium every year since 1995 , which is supported by the Han Moo Sook Foundation in Seoul, among others.
