The Handley Page HP24 Hyderabad was a four-seat biplane that was built as a heavy night bomber by Handley Page for the British Royal Air Force (RAF).
History and construction
For military purposes, the Hyderabad was derived from one of the first real passenger aircraft from 1919, the W.8 , and was supposed to meet the performance requirements of a bomber (first flight October 1923). It was the first large aircraft in the world to have automatic slats , but these were not used on the Mk I, the RAF's last heavy bomber made entirely of wood.
The delivery of the first 38 aircraft was slow. As the first Squadron , No. 99 Hyderabad in December 1925. It was not until 1928 that No. 10 Squadron with the conversion. In 1928 and 1929 two units of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force followed , the No. 502 and No. 503 Squadron.
The Hyderabad was replaced by the Handley Page Hinaidi . The retirement took place in 1930 with the RAF and 1933 with the AAF.
