Handley's shrew pouch rat ( Monodelphis handleyi ) is a species of opossum that was first described in 2007 and is known so far only from the Peruvian province of Requena in the Loreto region . The location is between the lower reaches of the Rio Javari and Río Ucayali .

Handley's shrew pouch rat reaches a head body length of 12.4 cm and has a 6.9 cm long tail. The tail has a length of 55% of the length of the head. The data are the mean values ​​from the measurement of the holotype and five paratypes. The animals weighed 45.5 to 65 g. The fur on the back and the top of the head are brownish, with the hair having a gray base and brown tips. Only the holotype has an unobtrusive dark central stripe. Reddish or yellowish tints on the sides of the body and dark circles under the eyes are missing. The peritoneum is dark cream-colored and lighter in the middle than on the sides. The paws are brownish. The tail is hairy and dark brown on the top only on the 5 mm close to the body and on the bottom only on the first 8 to 10 mm. The hair is shorter than 5 mm. Females have not yet been studied. You probably don't have a pouch. The number of teats is not known.

Way of life

Handley's shrew pouch rat is found in swampy and well-drained primary and secondary forests. The forests are richly planted with palm trees, have dense undergrowth and the treetops are usually 25 to 30 meters high. So far nothing is known about the behavior, diet, activity patterns and reproduction of the animals. Handley's shrew pouch rat is largely ground dwelling.
