A surface piercing is any body piercing that is placed on the surface of the body and goes through places that are neither convex nor concave. The puncture and exit channels are therefore on the same level.

Since they are usually under tension, they can be rejected by the body more often than other piercings and grow out in the process. It takes considerably longer to heal. However, with appropriate jewelry and precise placement, the risk can be reduced.

Jewellery

There are so-called surface bars especially for surface piercings : Barbells that have a 90-degree bend in the same direction at the ends and thus reduce the tension.

In addition to surface bars, flexible jewelry made of PTFE is also popular . The actually straight pin made of this material adapts to the curvature of the puncture canal, but exerts permanent pressure through the effort to return to its original shape. Alternatively, a thermally formed plastic or specially a surface bar made of PTFE can be used, but these are only rarely available. Curved barbells are often used, but unsuitable, as the screwed-on balls leave pressure points on the tissue at the ends, which causes the piercing to grow out. During this process, the pin of the barbell becomes visible at the ends of the puncture channel and, for aesthetic reasons, is usually replaced by shorter jewelry, which presses again due to the tight fit.

positioning

The correct depth of the puncture channel under the skin is important for a surface piercing. If the surface bar is not inserted deep enough, the jewelry is too loose. The ends protrude too far out of the puncture canal, tilt to the side and permanently irritate the surrounding tissue. If, on the other hand, it sits too deep, the balls press against the skin at the ends, which can lead to redness and inflammation.

Types of surface piercings

face

The most famous surface piercings include the eyebrow piercing , which was particularly popular in the late 1990s, and the bridge piercing on the bridge of the nose , also on the face .

body

Piercings pierced in the neck are the neck piercing, in the throttle pit the Madison piercing or on the collarbone the calvicle piercing .

A classic, temporary variant, which is usually done for artistic reasons, is the corset piercing , in which two rows are usually pierced vertically on the back and linked together like a corset .

Hand weaving

The hand web piercing is pulled into the skin fold between two fingers , usually between the thumb and forefinger . Since it is exposed to constant movements and other environmental influences on the hand, it grows out in most cases. Because it is more of a handicap in everyday life and the risk of injury is relatively high, this piercing is generally not recommended and its spread is rather low.

Hip piercing

The hip piercing is also a classic surface piercing. It is pricked at an angle on the pelvis near the hip bones and is mostly worn by women. Usually a piercing is placed symmetrically on both sides. In addition to the frequent problems that surface piercings are exposed to, additional complications can arise, depending on the position, due to friction of the waistband.

Intimate area

In the pubic area, Christina is known for women - and analogously for men, pubic piercing . In contrast to most other surface piercings, the Hafada piercing on the scrotum is particularly easy to carry out and the healing process is also much faster and less complicated.

Surface weaving

From Surface Weaving is used when a piece of jewelry goes through several surface piercings. This would be comparable to industrial piercing , which however is not a surface piercing. This can be done with flexible material or specially shaped jewelry, so-called Madmax bars .
The Samppa Studio in Finland is considered a pioneer of this variation.
