Hanna Mittelstädt

Hanna Mittelstädt (born 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German author, translator and publisher. In 1974 she co-founded the Edition Nautilus publishing house , which she managed until 2018. She brought u. a. Andrea Maria Schenkel's debut novel Tannöd and political non-fiction books by Deniz Yücel .

life and work

Hanna Mittelstädt is influenced by the 1968 movement and the philosophy of anarchism . When she wanted to become a city planner, she studied sociology, but broke off her studies to set up the edition Nautilus book publisher with Lutz Schulenburg and the French translator and poet Pierre Gallissaires in 1974 . The group oriented itself on the ideas of the Situationists and thus assumed an outsider position on the left of that time. After Schulenburg's death in 2013, she managed the publishing house on her own.

Mittelstädt was the publishing director, editor and read all incoming manuscripts as editor. With Pierre Gallissaires, she translated works from French for Edition, especially in the early years, texts by situationists, including Guy Debord , and by surrealists such as Benjamin Péret , Francis Picabia and Tristan Tzara . Translations took up a large part of the publishing program. In 2004 Andrea Maria Schenkel turned to Hanna Mittelstädt after the manuscript of her debut novel Tannöd had been rejected by other publishing houses. In 2005 the novel was published by Nautilus and became a great financial success for the publisher. In the 1990s, Hanna Mittelstädt began to publish her own prose . A letter project with the writer Anna Rheinsberg was created on her initiative . From March 1997 to March 1998, the Hamburg publisher and the Marburg-based author wrote "Letters about love and literature" once a week. It was published in 1999 under the title Liebe Hanna - Deine Anna in Edition Nautilus.

At the beginning of 2018, after a transition phase, Hanna Mittelstädt completely handed over Edition Nautilus to her five employees, who have since managed it as a collective. Since her retirement from the publishing house she has been writing the publishing history and organizing staged readings.

She lives in Hamburg.
