Hannes Bok (actually Wayne Francis Woodard; born July 2, 1914 in Kansas City , Missouri ; died on April 11, 1964 in New York City ) was an American artist and writer, best known for his cover art for science fiction - Pulp magazines .

Life

Bok is the creator of numerous covers for magazines such as Cosmic Stories , Famous Fantastic Mysteries , Fantastic Universe , Future Fiction , Imagination , Planet Stories , Stirring Science Stories , Super Science Stories and, above all, seven covers for Weird Tales . He also worked for Arkham House , Fantasy Press , Gnome Press and Shasta Publishers .

Although he created hundreds of covers and illustrations, he could have won even more jobs if he hadn't refused to conform to any of the client's specifications. In 1953 he shared the first Hugo Award in the Best Cover Artist category with Ed Emshwiller .

In addition to his artistic works, he wrote two fantasy novels that were published posthumously. After the death of his friend Abraham Merritt in 1943, he completed and illustrated two of his novels. In 1972, Spinner of Silver and Thistle , a collection of his poems, was published.

After 1953, Bok began to be primarily interested in astrology and published a number of articles on the subject.
