Arkham House
Arkham House is an American publisher that specializes in the publication of fantastic literature .
history
The publishing house was founded in 1939 by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei , initially only to publish works by their admired friend HP Lovecraft . They feared that his stories, which only appeared in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales , would otherwise disappear from the readers' awareness. The publisher's name is derived from the fictional town of Arkham , which is the setting for several Lovecraft stories. Bound editions of Lovecraft's collected works appeared here for the first time. The first volume published by the publisher was the now much sought-after collection The Outsider and Others . Although the book initially only sold sluggishly, Derleth, Wandrei and their publisher played an important role in Lovecraft's subsequent success.
Tales by Derleth ( Someone in the Dark , 1941) followed the first volume, followed by Clark Ashton Smith ( Out of Space and Time , 1942). The works of Robert Bloch , Fritz Leiber , Ray Bradbury , Ramsey Campbell , Basil Copper , Frank Belknap Long , Henry S. Whitehead and Robert E. Howard , as well as classics such as Sheridan le Fanu, were published in bibliophile and in small numbers . The publisher received the Convention Award of the World Fantasy Awards in 1983 .
