Russell Kirk
Russell Kirk (born October 19, 1918 in Plymouth , Michigan , † April 29, 1994 in Mecosta , Michigan) was an American political theorist, historian , social critic, moralist, literary critic and author. With his book The Conservative Mind , published in 1953, he significantly shaped American conservatism in the 20th century. In it he developed a framework for the conservative movement of the post-war era that had hitherto been rather amorphous. The book traces the development of conservative thinking in the Anglo-American tradition, paying particular attention to the ideas of Edmund Burke . Kirk was also seen as the main proponent of traditionalist conservatism. In 1989 he was honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal , the second highest civil honor in the USA.
