Presidential Citizens Medal

The President's Citizen's Medal

The Presidential Citizens Medal is the second highest civilian honor in the United States after the Presidential Medal of Freedom . It is bestowed by the President of the United States . A posthumous award is possible; multiple awards to the same person are not intended.

The medal was donated on November 13, 1969 and awarded for the first time in 1973. It can be awarded to any US citizen who “has done exemplary deeds for their country or fellow citizens ”. Anyone can submit proposals to the White House as to who should be awarded the medal.

The medal is made of gold and enamel and bears the seal of the President of the United States. The bald eagle is surrounded by a wreath of leaves. The medal is attached to a ribbon that consists of two dark blue and one light blue stripes in the middle and a white border on both sides.

Very few people have received both the Presidential Citizens Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom ; an example is Muhammad Ali ( Citizens Medal 2001, Medal of Freedom 2005).
