Bruce Cole

Bruce M. Cole (born August 2, 1938 in Cleveland , † January 8, 2018 in Cancún , Mexico ) was an American art historian and professor at Indiana University .

Life

Cole received a bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1962 and a master's degree in art history from Oberlin College in 1964 . He then received his doctorate in 1969 from Bryn Mawr College . From 1969 he taught art history at the University of Rochester . In 1973 he was appointed Distinguished Professor of Art History and Comparative Literature at Indiana University. His specialty was the art of the Italian Renaissance .

Cole was chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2001 to 2009 . After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , Cole changed the orientation of the NEH. While the NEH previously appeared primarily as a sponsor for art projects, Cole expanded the programs that advocate improved education in the field of art and history in American schools. He also launched the Picturing America project , which uses paintings to illustrate American history.

Cole died of a heart attack while on vacation in Mexico. He was married and had a son and a daughter.

Awards

In 2008, Cole received the Presidential Citizens Medal from US President George W. Bush . He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the "Medal for Excellence" from Indiana University in the same year . In 2010 he was appointed to the University's Board of Trustees. In 2013, Cole was appointed to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission. Cole was a corresponding member of the Accademia degli Intronati .
