The secretarial assistant Otto Hoffman founded the Prussian civil servants' association on October 29, 1875 . The first insurance policy is issued a year later.

Otto Hoffman's basic idea, mutual life insurance, which has remained the same to this day, was the cornerstone of today's Hanoverian life. The insured person is a member and sponsor of the association. There is no need for expensive insurance agents. On October 18, 1877, Kaiser Wilhelm I took over the patronage of the Prussian Civil Service Association.

On October 29, 1935, the association celebrated its 60th anniversary and the name was changed to Hannoversche Lebensversicherung aG, formerly the Prussian civil servants association . It was now possible for anyone to become a member of Hannoversche Leben . The insurance companies were included in the efforts of the Third Reich to bring them into line and thus participated in the discrimination against Jewish insurance customers. Soon after the 1938 pogroms , Jews were not wanted as policyholders.

In 1945, important Hanoverian administration buildings were destroyed in air raids on Hanover , so that work had to be stopped for the time being. In 1955, after the currency reform and conversion calculation, Hannoversche Leben was able to fulfill its profit promises from 1948–1954.

Due to the increased prosperity in the 1960s, Hannoversche Leben developed dowry and training insurance . After the pension reform in 1968 made it possible for the first time to replace the statutory pension insurance with a private insurance, access to the portfolio was increased to 250 percent. Direct insurance was introduced from 1977 to 1978, which significantly boosted Hannoversche Leben's business. In 2000 Hannoversche Leben celebrates its 125th anniversary. From 1994 to 2002 Eckhard von Uckermann was chairman of the board.

In 2003 VHV Versicherungen and Hannoversche Leben merged to form VHV Vereinigte Hannoversche Versicherungen aG . Hannoversche Leben has been the direct insurer in the new VHV Group ever since. In 2004, in collaboration with Berenberg Bank , the business expanded its product portfolio to include financial services. Now, in addition to “provision”, the second mainstay is “assets”.

In 2007, Hannoversche Leben expanded its product range to include vehicle insurance through the Hannoversche Direkt brand. Household contents insurance followed later. From March 2011 the brand name "Hannoversche" will be the common name for the composite and life insurance business.

In 2018, the number of insurance contracts increased to over a million for the first time.

Corporate structure

Hannoversche Lebensversicherung AG and Hannoversche Direktversicherung AG are subsidiaries of the VHV Group.

Rating / criticism

The international rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) gave the direct insurer an “A” grade (stable outlook) in 2012 and ranks it among the leading direct providers in the life insurance sector in Germany. The rating agency ASSEKURATA gave Hannoversche Lebensversicherung AG an A ++ rating (excellent) in June 2012. In December 2011, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported online that only six insurers allow a change to another insurer regulated in the contract. According to the Süddeutsche, the Hannoversche is one of these six providers. In June 2011 the online magazine focus.de described the Hannoversche as a particularly favorable long-term commitment in the field of construction financing. According to the magazine Finanztest (issue 07/2013), the occupational disability insurance of the Hanoverian is currently one of the best on the insurance market.
