Hans-Bernd Schäfer

Hans-Bernd Schäfer (born May 25, 1943 in Münster ) is a German economist who deals in particular with the economic analysis of law and has shaped this area in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Schäfer was a professor at the University of Hamburg and director of the Institute for Law and Economics there. He retired in 2008. He was also President of the European Association of Law & Economics from 2004 to 2007 and Director of the European Master's Program in Law & Economics from 2004 to 2008 . He is an affiliate professor at Bucerius Law School .

In 2012 he received an honorary professorship in the law faculty of the University of St. Martin de Porres in Lima.

Among Schäfer's numerous publications, the textbook on the economic analysis of civil law, which he wrote together with Claus Ott , deserves special mention . The book "Solomon's Knot: How Law Can End the Poverty of Nations", published jointly with Robert D. Cooter in the field of development economics, is one of his other important publications. Schäfer was co-editor of the International Review of Law and Economics .
