Hans-Christoph Diener
Hans-Christoph Diener (born March 19, 1951 in Pfullendorf ) is a German neurologist and former professor of neurology at the Essen University Hospital . Since 2016 he has been senior professor for clinical neurosciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen .
Life
Diener attended elementary school in his hometown and then the Stockach high school . After military service with a medical unit, he studied medicine from 1970 to 1975 at the Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg im Breisgau and from 1972 to 1975 psychology . In 1982 he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen , where he was now working as a doctor. Until 1989 he worked in Tübingen as a neurologist and senior physician at the University's Neurological Clinic.
From 1989 to April 2016 he was director of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Essen .
In 1994 he founded the first stroke unit in Germany. In 2006 he initiated the West German Headache Center, in 2010 the Vertigo Center in Essen and in 2015 the Back Pain Center. In May 2016 he took over a senior professorship for clinical neurosciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

In 2003/2004, Diener was chairman of the German Society for Neurology (DGN) and chairman of the DGN guideline commission.
Additional income
In 2016, around 20,000 doctors and people in the medical professions disclosed what remuneration they had received from pharmaceutical companies. In 2015, Diener received 200,000 euros from pharmaceutical companies and earned around 75,000 euros with books, articles and as a publisher. According to the company's own statements, 265,000 euros of these amounts have been passed on to clinic positions in the headache center, vertigo center and neurology department.

Research into headaches was one of his main focuses .
