Hans-Christoph Steinhausen

Hans-Christoph Steinhausen (* 23. May 1943 in Berlin ) is a German child and adolescent psychiatrist and clinical psychologist and emeritus professor .

Life

Hans-Christoph Steinhausen studied medicine and psychology at the Universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Hamburg. He then worked as a medical assistant at various Hamburg clinics, received a one-year scholarship from the German Research Foundation and then pursued his specialist training as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the psychosomatic department of the University Children's Clinic Hamburg, including a somatic year in the core clinic and a year in adult psychiatry in the general hospital Hamburg ox toll. He received his doctorate in medicine in 1970, completed his psychology studies with a diploma in 1973, received his doctorate in psychology in 1975, completed his specialist training in 1976 and qualified as a professor in psychosomatic paediatrics in the same year. In 1980 he was recognized as a behavior therapist .

He received his first professorship in 1979 at the Free University of Berlin , where he was acting head of the department for child and adolescent psychiatry from 1980 to 1987. In 1987 he accepted the chair for child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Zurich, where he worked as the medical director of the child and adolescent psychiatric service with a large outpatient and inpatient care contract until 2008. He then was the founding professor of the research unit from 2008 to 2016 for child and adolescent psychiatry at Aarhus University with assignment to Aalborg University in Denmark since 2014 . In 2008 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Institute for Psychology at the University of Basel . Since 2016 he has been advising the research unit at the Center for Mental Health of Children and Adolescents, Region H Psychiatry, Copenhagen as Honorary Senior Research Consultant and since 2018 he has been working scientifically at the Research Unit for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense .

Act

In addition to his many years of clinical activity and management function, Hans-Christoph Steinhausen has developed intensive scientific activities over decades and has published extensively on numerous topics. His early preoccupation with psychiatric and psychological aspects of chronic illnesses in children and adolescents was followed by a decade-long focus on eating disorders and in the field of child and adolescent psychiatric epidemiology with field studies in Germany, Switzerland and later based on registry data in Denmark. At an early stage he developed a special interest in developmental psychopathology with a focus on progression studies, which, especially through the first long-term observations on the development of children with fetal alcohol syndrome and the analyzes of the long-term course of anorexia nervosa, formed widely recognized research milestones.

He introduced the topic of attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (hyperkinetic disorders) in Germany early in the 1970s and is still active in this research area in international collaborations with clinical, epidemiological, neuroscientific and genetic research approaches. He has established other long-term research focuses on the topics of intellectual disability , autism spectrum disorders and elective mutism . He has developed diagnostic procedures for numerous mental disorders in children and adolescents, translated them and made them available as practice materials.

His scientific activities have led to an outstanding frequency of citation and to date to more than 900 English and German-language publications including around 60 books in the function of author and editor. His textbook on mental disorders in children and adolescents , which he wrote for the first time in 1988, is about to be published in the 9th edition and is considered to be the most widely used standard work in the subject.

Hans-Christoph Steinhausen was and is involved in the scientific supervision of a large number of academic theses , dissertations and habilitation theses as the contributing editor and advisor to numerous international scientific journals and, together with Manfred Döpfner as the editor of the Children's Diagnostics System (KIDS) book series . In addition, he is active in further education and training through specially organized curricula for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as the organization of numerous further education events for the professional public. In addition to intensive lecturing, he has been and is active internationally on behalf of universities, foundations, state institutions and scientific institutions as a reviewer for research projects and evaluations of scientists and research institutions in his field.

Honors

In 2008, Hans-Christoph Steinhausen was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Basel and an honorary member of the Swiss Society for Obsessive Compulsive Diseases and the Swiss Tourette Society . In 2013 he became Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Aarhus University (DK), in 2016 Honorary Member of the Danish Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Society and Honorary Senior Research Consultant at the Center for Mental Health of Children and Adolescents, Region H Psychiatry, Copenhagen (DK) and in 2018 Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense (DK).
