Hans-Curt Flemming

Hans-Curt Flemming (born September 11, 1947 in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance) is a German microbiologist, professor of microbiology at the University of Duisburg-Essen and writer.

Life

Flemming was born in 1947 as the first son of Jürgen Flemming and grandson of the airship Hans Curt Flemming . From 1968 to 1972 Flemming studied chemistry in Stuttgart and Freiburg and was a scholarship holder of the Fritz ter Meer Foundation during this time . In 1972 he obtained a diploma in chemistry. He then researched the biosynthesis of O-antigens in E. coli at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg until 1979 . In 1977/78 he received his doctorate. In 1993 he completed his habilitation on biofilms at the University of Stuttgart . From 1994 to 1996 he set up the "Biotechnology" department at the chair for water quality at the Technical University of Munich under Peter Wilderer.

Since 1996 he has been a C4 professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen. From 2003 to 2006 he was President of the International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Society and has other academic positions. He founded the Biofilm Center at the University of Duisburg-Essen, where he works together with Wolfgang Sand (Aquatic Biotechnology) and Bettina Siebers (Molecular Enzyme Technology and Biochemistry). He has published over 250 scientific papers and edited 9 specialist books.

His research interests include microbial biofilms , biofouling , biocorrosion , and drinking water hygiene . His teaching activities mainly relate to the interdisciplinary subject Water Science , which he essentially conceived in 2001. Chemistry, analytics and microbiology of water are taught in this scientifically oriented course. In addition to the scientific subjects, he leads the course "Art meets Science" with the artist Sigrid Lange (Cologne), in which various aspects of water are artistically implemented.

In his other life, Hans-Curt Flemming is also a writer. He has published four books of poetry ( approach , 1980, a note on my door , 1982, sprünge , 1984, suchbilder , 1989), two fairy tale books ( Pimpernell and the animals as well as sheets from the flying fairy tale book , 1984) as well as an illustrated self-experience book about his former group of men ( Eckart doesn't know he's beautiful , 1986).

He has been retired since October 2014 and now lives in Frankfurt and Friedrichshafen, but is still active as an author, reviewer and consultant.
