Hans-Harald Bolt (born December 2, 1960 in Cologne ) has been a member of the board of the Jülich Research Center since 2008 .

From 1999 to 2008 Bolt was a scientific member of the Max Planck Society and director at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching . Since 2008 he has been an "External Scientific Member" at the MPI for Plasma Physics.

education

Harald Bolt studied mechanical engineering in Aachen from 1980 to 1985 . He received his doctorate from RWTH Aachen University in 1988 and from Nagoya University, Japan in 1990. From 1986 to 1988 he was a Euratom visiting scientist in Japan at the Universities of Osaka and Nagoya and at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. From 1988 to 1990 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in the planning group for the next European fusion device and for ITER. From 1990 to 1992 he taught and researched as an Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo in the field of plasma-material interaction. From 1992 to 1998 he headed a working group for plasma technology at Forschungszentrum Jülich. In 1994 he was awarded the Gerhard Hess Prizeawarded by the DFG. In 1995 he was appointed professor ( C3 ) from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and has been an honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich since 1999 . In 2013 he was elected a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences .

So far, Harald Bolt has carried out his scientific research in the field of materials research. He developed u. a. Materials and coatings that help contain the hot plasma in fusion devices such as ITER and investigated the interaction of these materials with the fusion plasma. In the 6th Framework Program of the European Union, he coordinated one of the largest research projects in the materials sector, the EU project ExtreMat (New Materials for Extreme Environments).

Since 1981 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Franconia Aachen .
