Hans-Heinrich Limbach (born March 15, 1943 in Brühl ) is a German chemist. From 1990 to 2011 Limbach held a professorship at the Free University of Berlin . His main scientific interests are hydrogen bonds and hydrogen transfer.

Life

Limbach initially studied at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . After completing his intermediate diploma, he moved to the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he received his diploma with a thesis on the investigation of hydrogen bonds between phenol and tetrahydrofuran with 1 H- NMR in Herbert Zimmermann's group . Limbach then researched proton exchange in higher-order spin systems in the same working group under the guidance of Wolfgang Seiffert using 1 H-NMR and received his doctorate in 1973 in the field of physical chemistry.

After completing his doctorate, he continued to work on intra- and intermolecular double proton transfer processes and was able to demonstrate a tunneling mechanism for intramolecular double proton transfer in porphyrins and intermolecular double proton transfer between acetic acid and methanol in tetrahydrofuran. In 1980 he was awarded the venia legendi in physical chemistry for his habilitation thesis "Mechanism of mechanical cyclic proton exchange processes".

After his habilitation, a period of intensive travel between 1982 and 1986 broadened his scientific horizons. In 1983 he was visiting scientist in the group of CS Yannoni at the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, where he was introduced to solid-state NMR spectroscopy. In 1984 he went to C. Brad Moore's group, Physical Chemistry, UC at Berkeley as a visiting researcher for six months.

In 1990 he accepted the offer at the Free University of Berlin. In 1998 he initiated the first master’s course at the FU Berlin, the bilingual master’s course in chemistry, and in 2002 the doctoral course in chemistry. In 2002 Limbach was Chairman of the Gordon Research Conference Isotopes in the Chemical and Biological Sciences, 2007–2008 founding director of the Dahlem Research School (DRS) at the Free University of Berlin. He retired in 2011.

Limbach's research results have been published in more than 270 scientific articles and 14 reviews in refereed journals. At the same time he is the editor of a number of monographs and special volumes.
