Hans-Jörg Schek

Hans-Jörg Schek (born March 7, 1940 in Hanover ) is a German mathematician , computer scientist and professor emeritus at ETH Zurich .

Life

Schek attended high school in Wangen im Allgäu , studied mathematics at the University of Stuttgart (diploma 1968) and received his doctorate there in 1972 as a Dr.-Ing. with a dissertation on the optimization of traffic routes. At the same time, he and his doctoral supervisor, Klaus Linkwitz, developed a new method for calculating pre-tensioned cable network structures. In a team with Lothar Gründig and Ulrich Hangleiter, he applied this method to calculate the equilibrium of the stadium and the intermediate roofs for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munichon. He developed the force density method for the design and computer-aided form finding of surface structures. This method and extensions are widely used in practice, for example at TechNet, Lothar Gründig or Philippe Block ETHZ. The generalization and systematics of mathematical methods for network calculation led to his habilitation in 1978 with the license to teach mathematical methods in civil engineering and surveying.

From 1972 to 1983 he worked at the Scientific Center of IBM Heidelberg, where he initially dealt with end- user-oriented interfaces , especially search methods for "Partial Match Retrieval". One focus was then the integration of databases with information retrieval and the extension of the relation model to the NF2 model .

From 1983 to 1988 he was a full professor of computer science at the TH Darmstadt . From the DASDBS project established there, important further work on data modeling (NF2 model, object algebra), on transaction management (multi-layer transactions ) is to be found. and developed into expandable database systems.

From 1988 to 2005 he was Professor of Computer Science at the ETH Zurich and Head of the Institute for Information Systems. The work there has produced important results on the management of information spaces and on searching in digital libraries and on the concept of hyper-databases. From 2002 to 2006 he also held a chair at the Private University for Medical Informatics and Technology Tyrol (UMIT) , where he also held the position of Vice Rector.
