Hans-Jürgen Becker (born November 3, 1939 in Coesfeld ) is a German legal scholar .

Hans-Jürgen Becker studied law in Frankfurt am Main . He passed the two state exams in Frankfurt in 1964 and in Wiesbaden in 1969 . In between he received his doctorate in 1967 . 1972 followed the habilitation and the Venia legendi for civil law, German legal history and canon law.

Becker was appointed professor at the University of Frankfurt in 1974. In 1975 he accepted an appointment as full professor and director of the seminar for German law at the University of Cologne . From 1988 until his retirement on April 1, 2008 he was full professor for civil law, European legal history and canon law at the University of Regensburg .

Becker is editor of the legal history series (since 1978), the legal and political science publications of the Görres Society (since 1999) and the journal of the Savigny Foundation for legal history (canonical department) (since 1994). He was also chairman of the Association for Constitutional History from 1997 to 2001 . In 2010 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.
