activity

Initially primarily interested in history, Dieter Schwab, as a university lecturer, turned more and more to family law , the development of which he significantly influenced through numerous publications, lectures and statements and which, as a whole, formed the focus of his academic work. His personal conviction as a Christian based on Catholic social teaching never prevented him from dealing openly and without prejudice with reforms of state family legislation - for example in the area of divorce law and the law of non-marital partnerships . In his lectures, he liked to combine the imparting of legal knowledge with suggestions for promoting general education , for example by recommending reading the writings of Karl Kraus and spicing up legal case studies with proper names from Richard Wagner's operas.

From his temporary participation as an expert in the ZDF television series “ How would you decide? "The popular guide" My rights in case of separation and divorce "was created.

Dieter Schwab is co-editor of the magazine for the entire family law (FamRZ).

Honors

In 2000 Dieter Schwab was honored by the series of events "Colloquia for Dieter Schwab on his 65th birthday", also documented in book form. In 2003 he was awarded the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . The Friedrich Schiller University Jena awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2004 . On the occasion of his 70th birthday, a commemorative publication with the title “Perspektiven des Familienrechts” was published in 2005 . For his 75th birthday, his students brought out a collection of Schwabsch glosses under the title “Do you understand right?”.
