Hans-Joachim Kümpel

Hans-Joachim Kümpel (born November 3, 1950 in Uslar ) is a German geophysicist and was President of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) from 2007 to 2016 .

life and work

Kümpel grew up in Essen , studied mathematics and computer science at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg from 1971 and geophysics (as well as geology and oceanography) at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel (as well as two semesters at the University of Nice ) from 1973 . In 1977 he obtained his diploma in Kiel and received his doctorate there in 1982 ( inclination measurements between hydrology and oceanography ). He was a post-doctoral student at Dalhousie University in Halifax . From 1984 he was a research assistant and then an assistant at the University of Kiel, where he completed his habilitation in 1989 ( deformations in the vicinity of fountains ).

From 1991 he was Professor of Applied Geophysics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and from 2001 Director of the Institute for Geoscientific Community Tasks at the Geozentrum Hannover (now Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics ). During this time he also taught at the Technical University of Clausthal (professorship for modeling of geosystems) and later at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover . Kümpel has been a professor for methods of applied geophysics since 2007. In 2007 he became President of the BGR. From 2007 to 2009 he was President of the German Geophysical Society (DGG). Kümpel is also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .

He deals with applied geophysics, the theory of poroelasticity and pore water pressure anomalies, which he investigated in the Continental Deep Drilling Project (KTB), among others .
