Hans-Otto Karnath

Hans-Otto Karnath (* 1961 ) is a German neurologist , neuropsychologist and university professor .

Life

Karnath studied psychology and medicine at the Universities of Freiburg and Aachen . He received his doctorate in 1989 in Freiberg on the subject of disorders of mental planning processes after frontal brain damage.

He then worked scientifically and medically at the Neurological Clinic of the Universities of Freiburg, Aachen and Tübingen . He worked as a specialist in neurology and completed his habilitation in neurology and clinical neuropsychology in 1998 .

Karnath teaches as a professor of neuropsychology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen and is head of the neuropsychology section at the Center for Neurology and the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research .

Karnath is a member of the German Society for Neurology and co-editor of neuropsychological textbooks.

research

Karnath examines the spatial orientation and object recognition of people. The goals are on the one hand basic research in the field of perception of one's own body orientation, the processes of attention and spatial exploration as well as visuomotor coordination processes and on the other hand the development of treatment strategies for cognitive disorders after brain damage, e.g. B. by strokes , accidents and tumors.

For his research he received, among other things, the Heinrich Pette Prize of the German Society for Neurology (DGN) in 2002 in recognition of his scientific work on strategies for the treatment of brain-damaged patients.
