Life

Hempel is the son of a German mother and an Indian father who, however, did not live with the family. He was adopted by Felix Hempel, his stepfather. As a child he saw the bombings of Hanover and Berlin. After finishing school, he first trained as a nurse at the Jewish Hospital in Berlin . He then studied political science, became a member of the SPD and is involved in trade unions. At times he was the personal advisor to Heinrich Albertz , who was the governing mayor of Berlin at the time. After Albertz resigned in 1967, Hempel initially set up the press office at the TU Berlin . He later became head of the department for international relations at the TU Berlin.

After a personal crisis, he started training as a masseur, but then became a yoga teacher. Today he teaches yoga in his own school and at the TU Berlin, where he is also a lecturer.

Hempel is the author of several books, for example on " Heidegger and Zen " and two introductions to the philosophy of Zen yoga.
