Hans-Peter Vietze

Hans-Peter Vietze (born March 15, 1939 in Dresden ; died October 9, 2008 ) was a German Mongolist .

biography

Vietze studied Mongolian , Turkic and Altai Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1963 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of the expression of the plural in the “Secret History of the Mongols” . From 1963 to 1964 he worked as an interpreter and translator in Mongolia . In 1973 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on theory and materials for the automatic processing of Mongolian language data .

In 1976 Vietze received a professorship for Mongolian Studies at the Humboldt University. In the following years he held visiting professorships at Rikkyō University in Tokyo and at Washington University in Seattle . After the annexation of the GDR to the FRG , he was the first freely elected head of the Department of Asian Studies at Humboldt University.

In the early 2000s he worked as a freelance translator and consultant a. a. for the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal Criminal Police Office . In 2002 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Mongolia.
