Hans-Ulrich Rieker (born February 1, 1920 , † October 26, 1979 ) was a German theater actor , author and head of the Arya Maitreya Mandala for Europe.

Life

Rieker initially worked as a stage actor in classic theater roles. Addressed deeply by Buddhism , he was ordained as a novice monk in 1950 in the Berlin Buddhist temple . As a Buddhist mendicant monk, he then wandered through India on foot , where he met Lama Anagarika Govinda in 1951 , who became his main teacher. Govinda initiated Rieker into the Arya Maitreya Mandala, which he founded in 1933 . In 1952, Rieker initiated the European branch of the Arya Maitreya Mandala on behalf of his teacher and accepted Harry Pieper and Lionel Stützer as its first members. He built up the order in Europe and led this branch for twelve years, until progressive hearing loss caused him to withdraw from the public. His successor as head of the western branch of the order was Karl-Heinz Gottmann in 1964 .

Journalistic and public activity

Rieker gave radio lectures at RIAS on topics of Buddhism as well as Indian and Chinese philosophy. He has produced numerous articles and several books on these subjects. Rieker founded the magazine Der Kreis together with Wilhelm A. Rink . In addition, he worked as a yoga teacher in India after training . His books on Buddhism, yoga and meditation contributed significantly to the increasing interest in these topics in the 1950s and 1960s. Rieker's literary contributions to conveying the authentic tradition of classical yoga have also been recognized in India, for example by BKS Iyengar .
