Lionel Stützer (born November 1, 1901 in Leicester , England , † October 31, 1991 in Berlin ) was a pioneer of Buddhism in Germany, essayist and in 1952 co-founder of the European branch of the Arya Maitreya Mandala .

Life

Supporter, who had German-English parents, grew up in England, where he attended school in Manchester . In 1915 he came to Berlin and trained as a cartographer there . Through reading he became aware of Buddhism, to which he converted at the age of twenty. He joined Martin Steinke as a student in 1922 . At the same time he studied the tradition of Pali Buddhism with Paul Dahlke . After Steinke became a Buddhist monk in China in 1933, he imparted the teaching and practice of Chan to supporters . In Berlin, Siegmund Feniger was one of his closest friends.

In 1952 Lionel Stützer was one of the three founding members of the western branch of the Arya Maitreya Mandala, along with Hans-Ulrich Rieker and Harry Pieper . Until his death at the age of 90 he devoted himself to work for this order, in which he was particularly active in training candidates (novices). A native of Britain, Stützer worked closely with Henry Noel Marryat Hardy and Jack Austin .

He published hundreds of essays in Buddhist magazines worldwide, including numerous articles in The Circle , and presented other publications in the spectrum of gray literature . Because of his work, he was awarded a doctorate in Buddhist philosophy by the Alexander Csoma de Körös Institute for Buddhology in 1961 on the initiative of the Hungarian Buddhologist Ernő Hetényi .
