Hellmuth Hecker

Hellmuth Hecker (born October 12, 1923 in Hamburg ; † January 7, 2017 ) was a lawyer and a German interpreter of Theravada Buddhism , a chronicler of Buddhism in Germany and a translator from the Pali canon .

life and work

As a law student, he was introduced to Paul Debes by his friend Fritz Schäfer in 1945 and became his pupil. In 1948 he received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg and then worked as a consultant at the “Research Center for International Law and Foreign Public Law”, which in 1973 became the “Institute for International Affairs” with the “Institute for Foreign Policy”, a Hamburg foundation under civil law University of Hamburg was merged. His work focused on foreign constitutional and nationality law .

In addition to his numerous legal publications, especially on citizenship law abroad, he also came out from 1955 with works on Buddhism. Hecker's own works are in the tradition of Theravada Buddhism. Other focal points are the translations from the Pali , work on mysticism and the activity as an editor. He also made contributions to the history of Buddhism in Germany, which is why Martin Baumann called him the "chronicler of the German Buddhist movement".

His father-in-law was Paul Brock , on whose 100th birthday he published a bibliography and life story.
