from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Aesslinger , also Asslinger or Esslinger , († 1567 ) was a sculptor and medalist.

Life

Asslinger had been a citizen of Munich since 1535 and presented his masterpiece the following year . From 1537 to 1550 he worked at the court of Duke Ludwig X in Landshut . From 1550 until the end of his life he worked in Munich. There is also evidence that he was active in Salzburg in 1559.

Works

The Paris judgment

According to the works he still had, Asslinger worked in particular as a small-format medalist and sculptor, using soft Solnhofen stone . He designed ten medals showing Albrecht V of Bavaria and other personalities who were known in Bavaria between 1551 and 1558. At the end of the 1550s he created a life-size image of Albrecht V. This was in the Munich Old Academy in the coin collection until 1944 and was destroyed during the Second World War.

As part of his activities for the Kunstkammer Albrechts V, Asslinger designed two figural reliefs in 1550. Engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi served as a template . One engraving shows the Bethlehemite child murder , which was on view in the Deutsches Museum , the other engraving shows the judgment of Paris , which is in the Bavarian National Museum. From 1559 to 1561 he created an epitaph for the Salzburg Archbishop Michael von Kuenburg . Due to the stylistic design, it can be assumed that other artists were also involved.
