Hans Becker (born March 24, 1905 in Montabaur ; † January 7, 1980 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a German Roman Catholic priest, church historian and local researcher.

Life

Hans Becker was the seventh child of the Montabaur teacher and high school professor Heinrich Becker and his wife Maria, geb. Wing. In his youth he met the historian Heinrich Otto, a distant relative who was a senior teacher and professor at the Hadamar grammar school from 1898 to 1925, as well as the Montabaur grammar school professor and local researcher Johannes Ebert. They aroused Becker's interest in local history. In 1925 the Westerwälder Volkszeitung published works by Becker for the first time, which dealt with the history of Montabaur.

Becker studied theology in Fulda and Limburg. In Limburg he was ordained a priest in 1928 by Bishop Augustinus Kilian . From 1932 to 1940 he was chaplain, and from 1940 to 1974 pastor in various places in Taunus and Westerwald. After his last priesthood in the Limburg district of Ahlbach from 1959 to 1974, he moved to Limburg near the cathedral, through which he occasionally took visitors.

In 1947 Becker was one of the co-founders of the Society for Middle Rhine Church History . From 1949 he was a member of the Historical Commission for Nassau . At the places where he worked as a pastor, he wrote and published numerous church history and biographical articles and gave lectures. Hans Becker's extensive collection of materials is now accessible to the public in the Limburg diocesan archive.
