Hans Bernhard of Eptingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Bernhard von Eptingen (* 1432 , probably in Pratteln near Basel ; † December 6, 1484 , probably there) came from the Alemannic noble family von Eptingen . He and his brother Ludwig († 1500) are the sons of Rudolf von Eptingen († before 1447).

In 1460 he undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the entourage of Count Palatine Otto II von Pfalz-Mosbach , for which the tour company set sail from Venice on May 10 and returned there on September 12. He was made a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on the night of July 3rd to 4th, 1460 . After his return home on October 1st, he had a chapel built in Pratteln to commemorate it.

In 1464 the entire Prattel property (moated castle) of the family came to Hans Bernhard von Eptingen.

The brother house of the Benedictine order at Neu-Schauenburg Castle, which he donated in 1466, will later become a sister house of the Beguines.

In 1468 Pratteln was destroyed. In 1468 Hans von Eptingen became a citizen of Basel and a knightly councilor. He tried to rebuild the castle between 1470 and 1476. On September 4, 1476 he received from the German Emperor Friedrich III. the privilege of permanent tax exemption and the right to hold a market in Pratteln every year from October 1st to 3rd and to build a ferry across the Rhine for this purpose.

He is the author of the important travel report "Journey to Palestine in 1460".

Together with his brother Ludwig, he wrote the "Chronicle of the Family of Eptingen" (Eptingian family register).
