Athletic career

For the 1950/51 season of the GDR Oberliga , the 28-year-old midfielder Hans Birke appeared for the first time in the squad of the company sports community (BSG) Turbine Erfurt. He was used on the first league match day and initially played without a break until the tenth league round. After that, interrupted by longer breaks, he was only used in four more point games. After being suspended for five matchdays, he scored his only top division goal at the encounter on the 22nd matchday progress Meerane - Turbine Erfurt (1: 2) when he scored the Erfurt winning goal. After Löffler was operational again at the end of the season, he could also be used in the decider for the GDR championship in 1951 . This game had become necessary after Erfurt and BSG Chemie Leipzig had finished the season tied at the top of the table. Turbine Erfurt lost the game with Birke as middle runner with 0: 2.

Also for the season 1951/52 Hans Birke was again in the upper league squad of Erfurt. However, it was only used on the fifth and sixth matchday when two regular players, Werner Brock and Helmut Lipper, were canceled. He was then no longer called up and ended his career as a league player at the end of the season.

Then Birke worked as a player-coach. His first station was the BSG unit Erfurt-Mitte, which he led in 1954 to promotion to the third-class district league . Later he was the player-coach of the army sports community Vorwärts Erfurt in the fifth-class district class.
