Hans Dietrich von Gemmingen (1869–1958)

Hans Dietrich Franz Ludwig Gotthelf von Gemmingen (born June 11, 1869 in Bessenbach ; † January 29, 1958 ibid) was royal Bavarian treasurer, Prussian major and legal knight of the Order of St. John .

Life

He came from the sub-branch Bessenbach of the 2nd branch (Mühlhausen) of the 1st line (Steinegg) of the barons of Gemmingen and was the son of the royal Bavarian treasurer Oskar von Gemmingen (1838-1918) and the Karoline Freiin von Preuschen von und zu Liebenstein ( 1844-1922).

Gemmingen attended the humanistic high school in Aschaffenburg and, after graduating from high school, joined the Grand Ducal Hessian Guard Dragoon Regiment in Darmstadt in 1888 . As an excellent rider, he has won numerous prizes, including the Tsar Prize in 1897. After attending the riding school in Hanover, he came to Berlin in 1899 to join the Guard Uhlans . His wedding and the birth of his two daughters took place in Berlin. In 1906 the family returned to Bessenbach, but temporarily lived in the Bassenheimer Hof in Aschaffenburg during the renovation of the family seat there . During the First World War he was 1st adjutant of the governorate in Mainz , where the family followed him. After the end of the war, the family returned to Bessenbach, where Gemmingen then mainly took care of the management of its extensive property ( Unterbessenbach Castle with associated lands and forests). He had roads built and workers' housing and stables improved. The castle estate, previously run by a tenant, was managed by his son Albrecht from 1937 and, after his death, in 1946 as a prisoner of war by his widow Lui. Part of the forest property came to Gemmingen's son Hans-Werner in 1949; after Gemmingen's death, the castle property came to grandson Albrecht Viktor, the son of Albrecht Dietrich.

He married Elisabeth Freiin von Rheinbaben (1880–1960) in Ruhr on August 23, 1900. There were four offspring from the marriage:
