Hans Fikentscher

Hans Fikentscher (born February 23, 1896 in Augsburg ; † June 5, 1983 in Bad Dürkheim ) was a German industrial chemist ( polymer chemistry ). He was a director at BASF .

From 1919 he studied chemistry at the University of Munich. There he became a member of the AGV Munich in 1924 he received his doctorate in Freiburg (The Constitution of the Catechins). After completing his studies, he worked under Kurt Heinrich Meyer in Herman Mark's research group at BASF.

At BASF (or IG Farben), he was involved in the development of PVC products and processes, for example a mixed polymer of vinyl chloride with acrylic acid (troluloid). He was also involved in the first synthesis of polyacrylonitrile .

It is known for the Fikentscher K value for the viscosity of polymers. He introduced this in 1927 as part of an attempt to improve the quality of cellulose nitrate and acetate. Fikentscher attributed the quality defects to irregularities in the viscosity and developed a measuring method for these. The K value correlates with the average molecular weight of the polymer.

In 1976 he received the Hermann Staudinger Prize .
