Hans Frei (lute maker)
Hans Frei , also Hans Frey (* around 1450 in Nuremberg ; † November 21, 1523 in Nuremberg) was an important lute maker who worked in Nuremberg and Bologna .
Life
The universally educated Hans Frei was originally a coppersmith and also worked as a harpist and composer. He spent large parts of his life in Bologna, where he ran a workshop for making instruments. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum have preserved lutes by Hans Frei's. However, many of the renaissance lutes from Frei's workshop were bought up in the 17th century and converted into baroque lutes or theorbs , especially in France .
family
Hans Frei was Albrecht Dürer's father-in-law , who married his daughter Agnes († 1539) in 1494 . His son Johann Frei († 1523) was also a musician.
