Hans Günther van Allen (born June 30, 1934 in Haan , Rhineland) is a former German local politician ( SPD ). From 1975 to 1984 he was mayor of the Rhineland community of Lohmar .

Career

Van Allen came as the son of the worker Hans van Allen and Else van Allen, nee. Boquoi, to the world.

After training as an industrial clerk, he graduated from secondary school. This was followed by language studies at the University of Erlangen (English and Spanish). Graduated as an academically certified interpreter and translator. At the same time, a distance learning course in foreign trade took place at the Academy for World Trade, Frankfurt.

His professional positions were: export merchant in a medium-sized industrial electronics company, managing director of a German sales company in London, managing director of Mikropul GmbH, Cologne, the German subsidiary of the US Filter Corporation, New York, vice president international operations of the Air Control Group, a division of the US Filter Corporation, New York., Managing partner of Richard Schoeps, a medium-sized laboratory trading company in Duisburg, partner of the management consultancy Bercon Consulting, Frankfurt.

During his work at the US Filter Corporation, van Allen studied business administration and economics at several American universities and obtained an MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree. He then did his doctorate at the Union Graduate School, Cincinnati, as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a focus on economics.

Van Allen was also involved in local and regional politics. In 1975 he was elected mayor of the city of Lohmar in the Rhein-Sieg district and remained in office until 1984. During his term of office the construction of the large school and sports complex Donrather Dreieck falls. In 1976 he initiated the founding of the Lohmar Heimat- und Geschichtsverein. He later promoted the founding of the Lohmarer Wind Orchestra and the City Sports Association.

After his time as mayor, van Allen continued to be involved in policy-related areas. He founded the city marketing association Lohmar, of which he was chairman for a few years, he became chairman of the city partnership association "PluS" Europe, which oversees the four city partnerships of the city of Lohmar. He also remained active at the district level. For 10 years he was district chairman of the Social Democratic Community for Local Politics (SKG).

In 2014 he took over the chairmanship of the senior representatives directly elected by the population of Lohmar and, at the same time, chairmanship of the Association for the Promotion of Senior Citizens' Work in Lohmar.

Van Allen began teaching after 35 years in the private sector. In the 1970s / 80s he worked as a freelance lecturer for business administration and international management at several universities and colleges. a. Lecturer at the IBS International Business School in Lippstadt, at the EUFH in Brühl and at the FOM - University of Economics and Management in Cologne. Since 2018 he has been a lecturer at the Cologne Business School (CBS) and at the European University of Applied Sciences in Brühl.

In 2018 a book about him was published with the title “Vom Arbeitersohn zum Weltbürger”, a portrait in conversations, with a greeting from Professor Dr. Pinkwart, Minister for Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitization and Energy for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Awards

For his community services, van Allen was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1987 and the Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2004. On May 16, 2008 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Lohmar.
