Hans Georg Kmoch

Hans Georg Kmoch (born April 9, 1920 in Goslar , † December 2, 1967 in Bonn ) was a German arable and crop scientist.

Kmoch studied agriculture at the University of Bonn since 1947 , did his doctorate in 1952 under Ernst Klapp with a thesis on the development of roots under turf and then worked as an assistant at the Institute for Crop Production in Bonn. During a two-year research stay in the USA he dealt with questions of soil physics and with root studies. He studied the root work of the plant ecologist John Ernest Weaver (1884–1966) in detail and received suggestions for ecologically oriented root research, which is little developed in Germany. With his habilitation thesis on the air permeability of the soil, which he wrote in Bonn in 1962, he considerably improved the level of knowledge about the relationships between soil structure and root growth .

In 1963 Kmoch became associate professor and in 1964 full professor for general crop production at the University of Bonn. As the successor to his teacher Ernst Klapp, he took over the management of the Institute for Crop Production and the Dikopshof and Rengen experimental farms. As head of the institute, his scientific interest was predominantly in soil physics and root ecology . Most of his publications have appeared in the magazine for Acker- und Pflanzenbau . He received some suggestions for the conception of his research projects on his numerous trips abroad, which he carried out as a consultant and expert in the service of the food and agricultural organization FAO and on behalf of other institutions. Kmoch died at the age of 47.
