Hans Hinrich Sambraus

Hans Hinrich Sambraus (born August 31, 1935 in Bargteheide in Holstein ) is a veterinarian and zoologist who became internationally known primarily as a livestock specialist . He was Professor of Animal Husbandry and Behavioral Studies at the Technical University of Munich in Freising-Weihenstephan and is a pioneer in animal welfare.

Life

Hans Hinrich Sambraus is the son of the hardware dealer Otto Sambraus and his wife Margarete and grew up in Bargteheide. He passed his Abitur in 1957 at the Stormarn School in Ahrensburg and studied veterinary medicine and zoology at the universities of Munich, Berlin and Bern from 1957 to 1962 (approbation 1963). In 1965 he received his doctorate. med. vet. and in 1968 (with Konrad Lorenz ) Dr. rer. nat. In 1971 he completed his habilitation in the field of behavioral science (ethology). From 1981 to 2000 he was professor for animal husbandry and behavioral science at the Technical University of Munich in Freising-Weihenstephan.

In his research, he dealt primarily with animal welfare and animal welfare and made a significant contribution to ensuring that these topics were recognized in scientific research and in practice. In 1981 he founded the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animals . Several internationally known works on farm animal breeds emerged from his work. For a long time he was chairman of the animal welfare commission of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and has always advocated changes in factory farming .
