Hans J. Briegel

Hans Jürgen Briegel (born August 9, 1962 in Ochsenhausen ) is a German theoretical physicist . He is a university professor at the University of Innsbruck and researches in the field of quantum physics and quantum information .

Life

Briegel studied physics and philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1983 (with a stay abroad 1986-1987 at the University of Edinburgh ) with a diploma in 1990 and a doctorate in 1994 ( The Jaynes-Cummings model with dissipation and its application the dynamics of microscopic measles and lasers ). As a post-doctoral student he was at Texas A&M University , in 1996 at Harvard University (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) and at the University of Innsbruck . In 1997 he became a research assistant and, after completing his habilitation in 2002 ( quantum information and computers ), he became a private lecturer at the LMU Munich. In 2003 he received offers at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Innsbruck and in the same year became professor at the Leopold-Franzens-University in Innsbruck. Since then he has also been Scientific Director at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . Visiting professorships have taken him to the University of Bristol , Great Britain, and Tsinghua University in Beijing, among others . Hans Briegel is married and has two children.

Act

Briegel developed fundamental concepts in the field of quantum information as well as for quantum computers and quantum communication . In 2001 together with Robert Raußendorf proposed model of one-way or measurement-based quantum computer (English: one-way quantum computer or measurement-based quantum computer ) represented a new paradigm for the construction of a quantum computer, the corresponding publication is according to an analysis by Thomson Reuters. the second most cited work in the field of quantum computer research in the first decade of the 21st century. Together with his work on cluster and graph states, it led to a new understanding of entanglement as a resource for quantum information processing. The concept of the quantum repeater , which Hans Briegel presented together with colleagues in 1998, plays an important role in the field of quantum communication.

In recent times, Hans Briegel has repeatedly been pushing the limits of physics. He investigated the possibility of entanglement states in biological systems, for example in the magnetic compass of migratory birds. Briegel also took part in the discussion on free will and opposed the view that the laws of nature left no room for free will. With his concept of projective simulation, he developed a theoretical model that allows rudimentary forms of creative behavior for artificial agents .
