The Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) is an institution of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and was founded in November 2003. The institute, with locations in Innsbruck and Vienna , each with around 80 employees, is dedicated to basic research, theoretically and experimentally, in the field of quantum optics and quantum information .

The institute consists of a department in Innsbruck with six working groups around the scientific directors Rainer Blatt , Francesca Ferlaino , Rudolf Grimm , Gerhard Kirchmair, Oriol Romero-Isart and Peter Zoller as well as a department in Vienna (IQOQI-Vienna) with eight working groups around Markus Aspelmeyer (IQOQI-Viennass current director), Časlav Brukner , Miguel Navascués, Marcus Huber, Markus Müller, Yelena Guryanova, Rupert Ursin and Anton Zeilinger . The facility was set up as an independent research institute with strong connections to the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna . This is intended to stimulate a close exchange between students and postdocs and to ensure the integration of the members of the Academy Institute into teaching at the universities.

Working groups at IQOQI Innsbruck:

  • Quantum optics and spectroscopy (Rainer Blatt): quantum optical experiments and implementation of quantum computers on the basis of individual stored ions
  • Dipolar quantum gases (Francesca Ferlaino): experimental investigation of dipolar quantum phenomena with strongly magnetic atomic species
  • Ultra-cold atoms and quantum gases (Rudolf Grimm): Experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates and superfluid Fermi gases at extremely low temperatures
  • Superconducting quantum circuits (Gerhard Kirchmair): superconducting circuits in quantum information processing and quantum simulation
  • Quantum nanophysics, quantum optics and quantum information (Oriol Romero-Isart): theoretical quantum optics, atomic physics, nanophysics and superconductivity
  • Quantum optics and quantum information (Peter Zoller): theoretical concepts for the realization and implementation of quantum computers and quantum protocols

Working groups at IQOQI Vienna:

  • Quantum foundations and quantum information on the nano and microscale ( Markus Aspelmeyer )
  • Fundamentals of quantum physics and quantum information theory ( Časlav Brukner ): theoretical investigation of quantum physical phenomena and their effects on quantum information theory
  • Fundamental and theoretical aspects of quantum information (Miguel Navascués): Characterization of quantum correlations and quantum information in many-body systems
  • Quantum information processing and quantum communication ( Rupert Ursin ): Experimental development of applications of quantum optics in quantum information processing and quantum communication
  • Quantum Information and the Basics of Physics ( Anton Zeilinger ): Experiments with entangled photons and their application in the field of quantum communication
  • Quantum thermodynamics, quantum information and quantum metrology, theory and experiments (Marcus Huber)
  • Quantum Information and Basics of Physics (Markus Müller)
  • Young Independent Research Group (Yelena Guryanova)
