Hans Joachim Köhler (hippologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Joachim Köhler (born October 1, 1917 in Rostock ; † October 1, 1997 ), also known in part as the horse pope , was a German hippologist, author and founder of the Hanoverian riding horse auctions.

Life

Hans Joachim Köhler was born on October 1, 1917 in Rostock. He was the first child of Hans and Margarete Köhler. The family moved frequently after his two sisters were born. Gaining riding experience was more important to him than school. He made his Abitur at the Arndt-Gymnasium in Berlin-Dahlem and aimed for a career as a professional soldier.

Wartime

The Second World War was particularly influential for Hans Joachim Köhler . At the beginning he was stationed in France and Russia in the first squadron RR 14. Despite a serious injury in combat and the loss of his left lower leg, he fought in the 31st Cavalry Regiment of the Boeselager Equestrian Association in the last days of the war. At the age of only 27, Hans Joachim Köhler was responsible for over a thousand riders and horses. Through this job he learned important key skills. Köhler's motto "Praise where you can - blame where you must" aroused admiration and he became a role model for many.

Family life

Hans Joachim Köhler married the show jumper Helga Köhler in 1950 . Two years later, their daughter Jutta Köhler was born. They moved into a riding stables in Verden Borstel, called "Köhlerhof". Together they built their own breeding business and, according to their own statements, led a "tournament-related gypsy life".

Working world

Like hardly anyone else, Hans Joachim Köhler can be associated with the establishment and constant further development of the Verden location for the breeding and worldwide marketing of the Hanoverian horse. He broke new ground in horse marketing at a time when the decline of horses in agriculture and their increased use as sport and leisure animals were becoming increasingly noticeable. The first Verden auction took place in the winter of 1949 in the Brunnenweg barracks. The successful event concept was continuously developed so that good sales were achieved at the third and fourth auctions with more than 40 elite horses. As a result, the existing cattle auction hall on Lönsweg was rebuilt and used for the now half-yearly horse presentations. In 1972 the Niedersachsenhalle was built as an auction hall on Lindhooper Strasse and inaugurated with the 47th Verden auction in autumn. After 35 years and 70 auctions, Köhler resigned as responsible from his position.

After the death of Erich Clausen, Köhler took over the management of the German Horse Museum in Verden in 1969 . An extensive museum library was set up under the direction of Köhler; The temple guardian monument at the German Horse Museum was unveiled under his direction .

In 1985, after a long dispute with the top of the association, Köhler ended his collaboration with the Hanoverian Warmblood Breeders Association and thus with the Verden auction. The reason for the dispute was, among other things, the recognition of his Trakehner stallion Patras for the Hanoverian horse breeding. As a result, Köhler held his own foal auction.

Hans Joachim Köhler wrote numerous works as an author. From 1949 he published publications on Hanoverian breeding with the title Hanover's noble warmblood at regular intervals . In books such as To East Prussia because of the horses or Morjen Herr Landstallmeister he tried to keep the atmosphere and way of life in East Prussia alive.

Hans-Heinrich Isenbart paid tribute to Köhler that, as a soldier, he felt called to bring horses and people back from the war unharmed. He is an example of how much the handling of horses can educate people.

Honors

In May 2009 in Verden, in memory of Hans Joachim Köhler, a street was named after Köhler ( Hans-Joachim-Köhler-Allee ) on the former site of a barracks where the first Verden auctions were held . It is also thanks to Köhler that a cast of the Soviet statue of the Trakehner stallion Tempelhüter was installed in front of the German Horse Museum in 1974. Today the bronze figure is one of the most famous monuments in Verdens.
