Life

Empress Elisabeth Church on the Schneeberg

Hans Koch was the cousin of the sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider . Like him, he showed great artistic talent as a 14-year-old and also initially learned the painting trade. As a painter's journeyman, he wandered through Germany, Denmark, Austria, France and Italy. He used stations of these years of traveling to take lessons from well-known painters and at prestigious art schools. In Munich he attended the Luisenschule with Trull, in Berlin the art school with Karl Lange, in Copenhagen he broadened his knowledge with Juulmann and in Vienna he finally worked as first person for the court painter of the Austrian Emperor Ludwig Bestele . As a major commission from Emperor Franz Joseph, numerous designs and the subsequent execution of the painting of the Empress Elisabeth Church on the Schneeberg were created here . This was followed by the painting of the romantic church on Semmering and interior paintings for various hospitals in Styria . The last significant work for the court painter Bestele was the painting of the dome of the church at "König-Ludwigshöhe" on Lake Starnberg .
After passing the master craftsman's examination in 1904, Hans Koch went into self-employment in Augsburg . Here he married in 1906 and became a Bavarian citizen in the same year and a citizen of Augsburg two years later. After a few larger wall frescoes, more and more landscapes were created in his own studio. Koch is considered to be an important landscape painter. Mountain landscapes in the Alps determined his work, but there were also motifs of his trips to Italy, Scandinavia and the Mecklenburg homeland.
