Hans Kotter (musician)
Hans Kotter (* 1480 in Strasbourg , † 1541 in Bern ), also Johannes Kotter , was a German composer and organist of the Renaissance.
Kotter studied with Paul Hofhaimer from 1498 to 1500. After that he was organist at the Saxon court in Torgau until 1508 . He then took on positions in Breisgau and Freiburg im Üechtland (Switzerland), from where he was expelled after imprisonment and torture because of his Protestant denomination . From 1534 he taught as a schoolmaster in Bern . His organ book, which he compiled between 1513 and 1522, contains the first German organ dances as well as pieces by Hofhaimer, Josquin Desprez , Heinrich Isaac and others. Ten preludes have also been preserved , which are kept in a somewhat impersonal style and are close to his teacher Hofhaimer.
