Life and works

Hans Mocznay grew up in Bentschen (now Zbąszyń in Polish). In addition to teaching and studying in Berlin (with Moriz Melzer , Heinrich Günther-Gera and Johannes Itten, among others ), he worked as a freelancer from 1929 to 1939, particularly in the design of glass windows . After the end of the Second World War , he initially worked as an art teacher in East Berlin , later he worked as a freelance painter and sculptor and as a restorer at the Museum of German History in East Berlin. Between 1974 and 1986 he created 40 figures on prehistory and 140 sculptures on the peasant war for exhibitions at the Museum of German History, which organized a work exhibition on the occasion of Mocznay's 70th birthday in 1976.

His painting "The Hambach Festival on May 27, 1837" served as a template for a special postage stamp for the 175th anniversary of the Hambach Festival.

Many of his works are now in the holdings of the German Historical Museum , especially sculptures and historical paintings. Despite gradually going blind, he remained freelance until his death.
