Johann "Hans" Prader (* 1951 in Roßbach ) is an Austrian economist . From 1995 he was Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he was also twice President of the "European Representation at the IMF (EURIMF)". Until November 2014, Prader was Austria's representative on the IMF Board of Directors.

Born in Upper Austria, he attended the humanistic grammar school in Ried and was considered an “extremely intelligent student”. In 1975 Hans Prader received his doctorate in political science and sociology at the University of Salzburg with a thesis on the politics of the ÖGB from 1945 to 1951, which was published in abbreviated form under the title “The fear of the trade unions in front of the class struggle”. He also studied economics at the Universities of Vienna and Warwick ( Great Britain ).

He gained his first experience in the financial sector in 1976 at the Austrian National Bank, among other things as a representative of the National Bank at the OECD . He became deputy head of the international department. In 1987 he became Alternative Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund for Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg, Hungary and Turkey, and in 1990 Belarus, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Slovenia were added to his area of ​​responsibility. He was also President of the European Representation of the IMF for two periods in 1998 and 2006. His great-uncle was Georg Prader , who was Minister of Defense from 1966 to 1970.
